You can go back if you want to vs Go back I don't care if you want to

Someone is pushing me to start dancing again. It's not that I dont want to, I am not ready yet. I am not confident that I will do well and not hurt my knee. Not dancing for three months was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. my knee doctor said that I can go back to dance class, which is great! But, I am so afraid that I will hurt my knee again and create a worse situation.

"You have to go back to dance. You have auditions coming up." Yes, I know I have auditions... I'm the one that scheduled them. But, the auditions start at the END of January. Two months away. I have time. I'm not going to rush myself and feel like I'm putting my knee in danger to please someone else.

  2. You shouldn't go back to dancing if you don't feel ready.

Last year when I started to go for vocal therapy with Karen she taught me a whole new way of using my voice, which involved only singing in my head voice for a while - a few months in fact. Then when we started to bring belting back into the mix, I was scared of it because belting was what gave me my problem to begin with. But what I had to remember was that I was going to learn a new kind of belting. The belting I had done before was the type of singing that gives belting a bad name. I learned how to belt the healthy way, the right way, and I'm still working on it but I know I can do it because of all the knowledge I have no that I didn't have before.

I'm not saying you should push yourself to begin dancing at all because you don't want to re-injure anything. That's the last thing you want to do. But does your knee still hurt you like it used to? After I broke my foot, and it started the heal, the doctor said if it doens't hurt, go for it, if it does hurt, then don't do it. I was scared to jump, but the doctor told me to jump because it didn't hurt and it would be the only way to get back my strength. I think pain is a real great barrometer to go by. It's our body's way of yelling STOPPPP!!!!!!!!!!! As a dancer I can understand your nervousness about your knee, but I also think that if you try to dance, even if it's just in your room (doing plies or something) and you find that your knee doesn't hurt, you might not be as scared because you'll realize you can do it.

  3. I just re-read that comment, and I have one more thing to add. Trust your body, not necessarily your doctors or your parents, or even your psyche. (Sometimes I believe that our psyche just likes to play with our heads and freak us out) Your knee will tell you if it wants to dance or not.
